Peter Hampson, QPM, LLB, AKC, CIM, FRSA, Director General of the National Criminal Intelligence Service

Peter took up his current appointment as in March 2003. Previously he was Chief Constable of West Mercia Constabulary responsible for policing Herefordshire, Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and Worcestershire.

Starting as a police cadet in 1964 in the former Devon Constabulary, Peter moved to the Metropolitan Police as a Constable in 1967, rising through the ranks to Chief Superintendent. He joined Surrey Police in 1994 on promotion to Assistant Chief Constable with responsibility for the Crime and Operations portfolio.

In 1996 he was appointed Assistant Inspector (Deputy Chief Constable) and began a 2 year secondment with Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary dealing with crime, operational and international policing, and the criminal justice process. He worked closely with the UK SBA Police in Cyprus, the International Police Task Force in Bosnia and the United Nations in New York.

He was awarded the CBE in 2003. In 1998 he received the Queen’s Police Medal and was appointed Officer (Brother) in the order of St John. He has a degree in law from King's College, London, is a Companion of the Institute of Management and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce. He is happily married and has three adult children.
