Andy Newton, Senior Lecturer and Professional Lead for Paramedics, University of Hertfordshire

Andy was the UK’s first academic appointment of a ambulance manager/paramedic and holds a number of advisory positions with Department of Health, Health Professions Council, HPC, [paramedic board member and reciprocity advisor], Ambulance Service Association [AETAG]. The Quality Assessment Authority [standards development], The Commission for Health Improvement, [Clinical Governance Reviewer].

Andy leads the University’s project team tasked with developing the Emergency Care Practitioner, ECP. he has adapted and taught a unique ‘Human Factors’ educational course designed to support Clinical Governance through improved patient safety.

He has developed a Masters level programme within EU educational framework [Socrates] partner institutions in Paris and Helsinki, where he undertook a teaching exchange.

Andy has also undertaken several consultancy projects in the UK and in Nigeria & supported humanitarian medical assistance training programme on behalf of a charitable organisation in Bulgaria & Ukraine.

Assistant Director of Operations, Staffordshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust - responsible for Accident and Emergency Services, 1994-98.

Prior to this appointment, Andy spent 15 years with the London Ambulance Service.
